Friendly cops join snake hunt in Umzumbe

Not only were they a saving grace when it came to finding the house, the obliging officers also stopped along the way to give two elderly women a lift.

Two helpful policemen, Sergeant Thando Ndamase and Constable Patrick Cele of Southport police station went the extra mile – quite literally – to help snake catcher, Sarel van der Merwe find a house in the Umzumbe area which had a black mamba lurking in the ceiling.

Sarel, accompanied by Herald journalist Shona Aylward, drove for miles into the hinterland in search of the house. Along the way, they met up with the delightful Sgt Ndamase and Cst Cele who were only to happy to assist the snake catcher.

Not only were they a saving grace when it came to finding the house, the obliging officers also stopped along the way to give two elderly women a lift.

The well-mannered Cst Cele even jumped out of the van and opened the door for the women.

Despite the best efforts of all concerned, Sarel didn’t manage to catch the snake and had to return the following day.

“It was bit of a wrestling match to get the 3.2 metre mamba in the bag and I ended up with my one foot through the ceiling. Not the best place to bag a black mamba when you’re on your stomach.”

Shortly after this adventure, brave Sarel drove to Mtwalume to where he caught another black mamba in a bedroom.
