Man fined R1 000 for catching dog ‘like a fish’

The dog's owner arrived home to find his pet crying in pain, with fish hooks in its mouth.

Gcilima resident Mzuvukile Nqoko (34) recently pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court.

He paid an admission of guilt fine of R1 000.

This is trainee inspector, Jacob Maduna of the Lower South Coast SPCA’s first animal cruelty case.

On November 26, 2018 Nqoko, tired of dogs attacking his goats, snared a dog using bait and fish hooks and, when he had ‘reeled’ it in, he stabbed it.

The dog’s owner arrived home to find his pet crying in pain, with fish hooks in its mouth.

The animal had also swallowed some of the hooks.

When trainee inspector Maduna arrived he found the severely injured dog, who had eight young puppies, unable to move.

The animal had to be euthanised to end its suffering.
