Sheppie Snippets: Classical artist sets the tone

The art of classical singing has been practised on the Indian subcontinent for ages.

SOUTH Coasters expected a feast of cultural and traditional entertainment and that’s exactly what they got when leading classical artist Magantharen Balakisten performed for them at Andhra Sabha Hall last Saturday.

Hosted by several South Coast temples in collaboration with Shadaksharam, the show ‘Arupadai Veedu’ was held to raise awareness on the sacred work of Arunagirinathar in praise of Lord Muruga.

Mr Balakisten said the art of classical singing has been practised on the Indian subcontinent for ages. “The art is popular, not as a form of entertainment, but as a means of connecting with the Divine Being. In fact, it is considered as one of the basic ways through which a human being can connect with God.”

He added that the distinct forms of melodies sung by classical singers are known as ‘Ragas’. Some of these Ragas are said to have a divine quality in them, which helps an individual in meditating.
