Tweni Talk: Local heroes step up to help

It was good to see the community prepared to help one another during the recent floods, but special mention must be made of several people in particular.

Thanks of course go to all who helped out in so many way during the recent floods, from offering the use of their 4x4s to making sandwiches.

Local heroes

Debbie and Sheree Holl, who warned people not to travel down Norwood Road where a vehicle had become stranded in the dip; Calvin Harris from Jaxx who rushed to assist when a bakkie was washed off Mgazi Road nearby, and managed to rescue one of the occupants; Derek Herbet who offered assistance with a boat and a 4×4 to rescue the Moola family in Louisiana (thankfully NSRI , Law Enforcement Fire and Rescue ,along with Tinus Greyling, Mohamed Ismail and Selvan Chetty were also there to help); Lane and Kelly Allan who discovered a sinkhole in Old St Faiths and collected danger tape from Mike Davies and closed the road.

Generous donors

Tweni Conservancy is building a braai area and toilet at the Whale Deck so visitors to the deck will no longer have to use the bushes. Thanks to Johnny Raath, Guy and Jean Osborne of PSP for the blocks, Roto Tank for the septic tank, Malcolm Carr for the toilet and cistern, as well as the volunteers who assisted with the foundations.

Many hands

Last Saturday, Chris Polinski asked volunteers to get involved in cleaning up Tweni beach. He says that a small army turned up between 7.30am and 9am and did a wonderful job.

Tim and Cecilia Barratt took part in the Tweni beach clean-up last Saturday morning

Med-Evac donated gloves, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) made sure there were bags for recycling and for trash, while Clive Berry brought a skip to the beach and then removed it as well as all the filled bags at the end of the clean-up.The three tyres collected will need to be removed by RNM.

Sorry state

The Commercial Road recycling bins look disgusting. While monitoring the CCTV cameras over the weekend your scribe watched a man arrive with a full bakkie load he never even attempted to recycle.

Donna and Allen Phillips thoroughly enjoy the Golden Singers’ Easter concert.

He dumped everything – from a TV and microwave to clothing and general rubbish – in front of the bins, making it difficult for responsible people to get to the bins to recycle properly.

The frustrating thing is that RNM does a wonderful job of cleaning up and then it only takes one person to undo all the hard work.

The Golden Singers held a very successful Easter concert under the guidance of new choir mistress Marthina Venter and accompanied by the talented orchestra. The very appreciative audience thoroughly enjoyed the singing and delicious snacks provided.

Celebrations

Congratulations to Frazer and Cilel Smith, who recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary, and to Lorette and Eddie Ringo who recently married and honeymooned aboard a cruise ship.

Celebrating birthdays are Erin Massey who turned six on the 25th, Terry McGovern (26th), Vic Bard (29th) , Cabri van Zyl (30th), Lee Fagan , Tharina Wessels and Joanne Kobben (May 1), Nikki Cruden (2nd) and Lynn-dee van Eeden (4th).
