Fidler in the Hood: After The Ball is Over …
The general election has come and gone and we have survived the ordeal.
GREETINGS! The general election has come and gone. We have survived the ordeal. Nothing new, and perhaps as expected, back to the drawing board and face the music ‘after the ball is over’. Back to appealing on deaf ears about overgrown grass verges, non-working street lights and prize-winning potholes. Let’s see if those oft-promised service delivery matters come about, although ‘J’ai mon doutes’ (pardon my French).

Our local social season is upon us, whether it’s keeping fit, gorging over breakfasts, luncheons and dinners, show-time or fun-time. It’s all happening down here in our own backyard. Trusting you all keep diaries or have COs who do the diarising. It’s a wonderful world, if you can keep up the pace.
No lies
Somehow the CO strong-armed your scribe into joining SHAFTS (Self Help Association For The Seniors) which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. All kinds of fun and nonsense is the order of the day. Coming to a ski-club near you this week is the popular ‘WILTY’ get-together tomorrow (16th), kicking off at 9.30 for 10am.
WILTY stands for ‘Would I Lie To You?’, when one will be asked to listen to outrageous stories and then decide if true or false. Sounds like fun. After a lifetime of ‘not getting away with it’, maybe this is a big chance! What? Rob Fidler tell a whopper? It’s also a self-help-yourself regarding the eats, but, as long as you don’t bring along caviar and paté de fois gras, you won’t be out of pocket.
Southern Shoreline Challenge
Three days later on this-coming Sunday (19th) everyone is invited to enter the annual Southern Shoreline Challenge – the first leg commences from the NSRI, Shelly Beach, along the coast to Lucien beach.
Thereafter walks will be on alternate Sundays (June 2 to August 18) to the final leg, which will be at Mzamba in the Transkei.
The good news is that walkers may bring along a driver (with car), who will drop you off and ferry you back after taking part in the walk. You can’t ask for better than that, folks. The entrance fee is a mere R20, which will include a cuppa. To boost energy levels, for R30, a breakfast roll will be available. So, for the next three months, it’s a case of all systems go.
Annual walk
It’s a few weeks off, but, again, put this down in your diaries: Wednesday, July 3, will see the 35th Annual Grandparents’ Walk take place. Organised by the local Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast and their Rotary Anns, this event is something of an institution, generally with around 400 ‘Golden Oldies’ entering the walk for a morning out-of-the-house get-together.
Organisers are seeking sponsorships to support the event and businesses can display company logos, set up banners or signage or sponsor individuals at R100 per walker. After completing the walk, a scrumptious breakfast will be available at R20pp. All this to the skirlish sounds of Scottish Highlands bagpipe music, too.

The good news is that grandparents may take along their much-adored grandchildren and the rest of the family to show that the golden oldies still have it in them and can last the pace.
We Are The Champions
At last it can be told! Your scribe didn’t want to mention it, but the editor insisted, so okay, boss: it has been a week of hell, stress, sleepless nights and loss of appetite (well, not quite). The cat kept out of the way and the CO was strangely subdued. However the anguish has been laid to rest. Why, you may ask?
Glory, hallelujah! Beloved Manchester City won the English Premiership, beating ‘old enemy’ Liverpool to the title. To all Scouser football fans, and especially Wally Williams of Shelly Beach, eat your heart out – better luck next season. For now, it’s CTID (City Till I Die)! Life can be so beautiful! See you, Rob
