From small beginnings, many great things grow – including the incredibly successful Uvongo parkrun which celebrated its sixth anniversary last Saturday.
The first Uvongo parkrun took place in May 2013 where a handful of walkers and runners ignored the inclement weather to join Bruce Fordyce at St Michael’s for the inaugural run.

Now people of all ages and physical fitness levels line up at St Michael’s every Saturday morning at 8am, to do this free, timed run. It is one of many parkrun events held worldwide, every week.
The course is renowned for being one of the most beautiful of South Africa’s 100 parkruns. It is run on a mixture of pavement, grass and sand, including two sections of beach. It is well sign-posted and marshals are available at key points.
Park run co-ordinator Willie Burgh said he is proud to be celebrating Uvongo parkrun’s six-year milestone. “We have an amazing community of regular runners, joggers and walkers and always welcome and encourage first-timers to come along and join us. There is a band of amazing volunteers that make the parkrun happen at this free weekly event,” he said.

Mr Burgh went on to thank all the runners for their support. “It’s a great privilege for Uvongo to be part of the parkrun movement and great to see people coming together every week to run and volunteer. Sport has the power to bring people together and have a positive impact on our health and well being.”
