Do you know why the international service club is called Lions? It is an acronym which stands for Liberty, Intelligence and Our Nations’ Safety.
Lions Clubs International boasts a membership of more than 1,7 million worldwide (as of June 2018). It was founded in Evansville, Indiana on October 24, 1916, by Dr William Perry Woods but evolved as an international service organisation under the guidance and supervision of Melvin Jones.

He was a Chicago business leader who told members of his local business club that they should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world. The Lions motto is ‘We Serve’. Local Lions Club programmes include sight conservation, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, international relations, environmental issues, and many others.
