Looking back on South Coast history, 1991 to 2000: May 28 to June 3

Harbour plans were in the news again and a game reserve looked to be on the cards.

While Indian businessmen were allowed to trade in the Transkei, the whites were being turned away and all white businesses in Bizana had been closed.

May 28

1993
“A boycott of white businesses trading in Port Edward and the Transkei got into full swing this week.”

“On the 100th anniversary of the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa a miracle had happened in Marburg, said Mr JD Naidoo at the opening of the Marburg Haven Service Centre last Sunday.”

May 29

1992
“Oil from the Katina P, which sank off the Mozambique coast at the end of April, eventually hit the Lower South Coast beaches this week. Lumps of heavy, solid oil were reported from Port Shepstone and Sunwich Port on Sunday.”

1998
“Spoornet has given the green light to the removal and relocation of the Mzimkhulu River rail bridge to make way for the proposed Port Shepstone Small Craft Harbour.” But they didn’t say they would pay for it! And the main road was another story.

“A former Margate escort agency manager shed a few crocodile tears to convince the court that he was “truly sorry” for stealing a baby crocodile.”

There was a different reason for lack of service. “Business was severely disrupted when rats ate through a Telkom fibre optic cable.”

But the same gripes in other areas. “Mgangatho Ward residents are angry that appeals to upgrade their area have been ignored.”

June 2

1995
“Three motorists had their vehicles stoned on the N2 near Hibberdene last Saturday night.”

2000
“Police crack down on illegal shebeens.”

And another big scheme was hatched. “Three of the ‘Big Five’ game species could be introduced to a game reserve being planned near Port Shepstone.”
