A Durban-based environmental journalism training agency, Roving Reporters, is recruiting two or three interns to assist it in covering environmental and social justice issues.

The internships, worth R50 000 each, are sponsored by Grindrod Bank in association with the Human Elephant Foundation and the 8 Mile Club.

What will the internship involve?

A strong emphasis on fieldwork and out-of office experience, including participation in initiatives like the Wilderness Leadership School trail, hikes along the Wild Coast and fieldwork in the Kosi Bay area of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

• In addition there will be:
  One-on-one tutoring and editing of students’ work with a view to writing stories fit for publication;
  Ongoing mentoring;
  Tutorials and revision of journalism basics as required; and
  Training in pitching stories

How to apply

All applicants must submit CVs (including at least one traceable reference),  a copy of their IDs, a 500-word story that they have written themselves on the topic: “The most embarrassing moment in my life” and a brief 150 – 250 word motivation on why they would like to enrol.

We have three applicants shortlisted so far, and are now casting the net further in recruiting top candidates on the lower South Coast and Eastern Cape – Roving Reporters director, Fred Kockott.

What next?

Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a written test.

These will be in the form of a general knowledge test and a story rewriting exercise which will measure language skills, logic and comprehension.

Eight candidates will thereafter be interviewed in person or via telephone

References will be checked and successful candidates will be notified.

Other terms and conditions

Interns will receive a monthly stipend of R3000 – R5000 per month, sponsored by the Human Elephant Foundation. Any revenue raised from the sale of their stories during the course of the internship will be reinvested in Roving Reporters projects.
It will be the interns’ responsibility to find and pay for their own accommodation in Durban and to cover any transport costs not directly related to Roving Reporters assignments. Accommodation will be provided in Port Edward when interns are working on assignments on the Wild Coast.
In addition to any public holidays, they will receive 10 days leave at a time agreed to by Roving Reporters.
Interns will be required to work overtime and on weekends on occasion but will receive time off in lieu.
Interns are required to supply their own laptop computers and cellphones.
The internship period will be completed by mid December. Roving Reporters gives no undertaking of further employment.
