Peggy Nkonyeni appointment questioned by opposition parties

Both the DA and the IFP questioned the MEC's reappointment, citing past corruption allegations and lack of experience as reason for concern.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said it was pleased with the recent establishment of the sixth provincial government administration, despite concerns from opposition parties.

This after the DA and IFP slammed the appointment of several MECs, and in particular that of local ANC member Peggy Nkonyeni to the Human Settlements portfolio.

Both parties questioned MEC Nkonyeni’s reappointment, citing past corruption allegations and lack of experience as reason for concern.

DA’s Francois Rodgers said the appointment was ‘alarming and not carefully thought through’.

“It’s strange to see her return after she was linked to a tender scam. Her being allowed to come back into the fold is questionable,”

IFP leader Velenkosini Hlabisa called the appointment “a big mistake”.

According to Mr Hlabisa, the reappointment of MEC Nkonyeni was “a fatal compromise that puts in question the current premier’s integrity and the commitment he made under oath to fight corruption”.

However, in a statement the ANC said it was confident that the members of the new provincial executive council, including MEC Nkonyeni, would prioritise service delivery as opposed to advancing narrow political interests.

The party said it had “deployed seasoned cadres who are critical thinkers”.

“We are confident that the new MECs will play a vigorous oversight role over government departments to ensure accountability in the use of taxpayers’ money,” the statement continued.
