Learn more about dementia at the Scottburgh Library

Talks will be held at the Scottburgh Library on Monday, June 3, June 10 and June 24 from 9.30am to noon.

Although Dementia Action Week ran from May 20 to 26, Umdoni Retirement Village resident, Neil Hannam, has taken it upon himself make to June a dementia awareness month.

To this end, he will co-ordinate talks on the condition, and will also offer advice on how to care for sufferers.

These talks will be held at the Scottburgh Library on Monday, June 3, June 10 and June 24 from 9.30am to noon.
Mr Hannam pointed out that this would be the first mental health public meeting in the town since a talk on Alzheimers disease in 2016.

Dementia cannot be cured, only treated, Mr Hannam said, adding that it is not actually a disease, but rather a term used to describe the decline in one’s mental ability until it reaches a point where it becomes so severe that it interferes with daily life. “Dementia is caused when nerve cells are damaged or if their connection to the brain has been lost.

If someone suffers from this disorder, changes such as memory loss, confusion, disorientation and difficulty with things such as problem-solving, organising, and carrying out tasks will become apparent.”

There are also psychological effects, including personality changes, hallucinations, anxiety and inappropriate behaviour.

“Dementia is a worldwide problem that everyone should be aware of. Care centres can be expensive and most are overflowing with people, so consider attending the talks and watching some of the videos to understand that age and lifestyle will determine if this condition may affect you and also to gain some useful information on how to care for sufferers,” said Mr Hannam.
