Shelly’s ski-boat beach is trawled for trash

All the wood removed from the beach was used to build a bonfire.

Following on from the successful Margate beach clean up two weeks ago, the teams from that initiative got together again and cleaned up the beach at the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club last Saturday. A donation of R20, which went to the Lower South Coast SPCA entitled cleaners to enter a lucky draw with fantastic prizes.

Madelein Stopforth, the woman behind the ‘Margate is Magic’ campaign also put on gloves and did her bit at the cleanup. She said clean beaches provide economic benefit to local communities in the form of tourism. “Beachgoers ranked the absence of debris and good water quality as very important in deciding whether or not to visit a beach,” explained Ms Stopforth.
