Faction fighting, violent crime, drugs and a teachers' go-slow all featured this week.
But it was the sardine run that was the talk of the town.
June 4
1999
“Sardine fever hit the South Coast on Wednesday – conveniently a public holiday.”
June 5
1992
“Continuing faction fighting in the Harding area left six dead and two seriously injured after an early morning clash last Sunday.”
But there was some good news. “The opening of the new wing of the Port Shepstone Hospital would result in the standardisation of facilities for all its patients, irrespective of race, said the Director of Hospital Services.”
“Traffic officers seize 52kgs of dagga at Sea Park.”
1998
“Thousands of local children will be affected by the proposed ‘go-slow’ by teachers next week.”
“Herald investigation leads to arrest of alleged conman.”
June 6
1997
“Five gunmen, one armed with an AK47, held nine people hostage at the Shelly Centre last Friday night.”

1991
“There was heated debate at the Umtentweni Town Board’s long-awaited public meeting to present the draft budget for 1991/92 at the Tweni Town hall on Monday this week. The chairman was frequently interrupted during the two-hour meeting at which he announced a 28 percent increase in the rates for 1991/92 and a decrease in the deficit from almost R440 000 to R135 000.”

1995
“Minister of Home Affairs in the national government and president of the Inkatha Freedom Party, Dr Mangosutho Buthelezi, will visit KwaXolo this Sunday.”
2000
“Seine netters hauled in the first crates of ‘silver gold’ as the annual sardine shoals made an appearance this week.”

1994
Two women foiled an attack. “…screaming like one of those characters in a Bruce Lee kung fu movie, she rushed towards the man and threw her steaming hot coffee in his face. And, as a coup de grâce, pushed the cup into his face, breaking the cup in the process.”
