Don’t be fooled when out shopping, warn police

Be aware of people who pose as policemen.

After a spate of crime-related incidents recently, police are urging the public to be more vigilant when shopping.

People posing as store employees ask shoppers to leave their parcels or handbags with them for safekeeping, promising the shopper a discount or voucher in return.

“These people sound very convincing and shoppers, especially senior citizens, are being targeted. When they return to collect their goods, shoppers find they have been duped and their possessions stolen,” said police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge.

He also advised the public to be on the alert when carrying or withdrawing large amounts of cash, and to be especially aware of people purporting to be policemen who encourage them to accompany them in an unmarked police vehicle.

“Always insist on authentic police identification,” he said.
