Bonfire burns up dead wood on Ramsgate beach

Volunteers of all ages contributed to the success of this programme.

With two successful beach clean-up campaigns already in the bag, the latest ‘South Coast Bonfire’ took place at Ramsgate beach last Saturday. All the wood that was washed up onto the beach was gathered up by volunteers and placed in a huge bonfire.

“Volunteers of all ages contributed to the success of this campaign to keep our beaches and coastline clean. We are definitely seeing an increase in the number of clean-ups being organised, as the public is begining to realise that all wood eventually finds its way into our oceans and endangers marine life,” explained Mr van Riet.

“Picking up the wood  feels right, is good exercise and fun to do,” he said.

World Oceans Day, a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future, takes place this Saturday, June 8.
