Acting Ugu mayor earns her BA degree
The 43-year-old mother of five says she juggled her busy schedule and classes with ‘many hours of studying’ in order to obtain her degree.
Despite a hectic schedule, Ugu District Municipality acting mayor, Phumlile Mthiyane still finds time for her academic studies.
Mrs Mthiyane earned her BA degree in public administration and communication facilitation from the University of Technology.

The 43-year-old mother of five says she juggled her busy schedule and classes with ‘many hours of studying’ in order to obtain her degree.
Mrs Mthiyane is expected to receive yet another degree in leadership and local government management from the University of Witwatersrand later this year.
According to her, these qualifications will enable her to improve her leadership abilities and guide her in developing and implementing public policy, managing public resources, and delivering public services.
“Tough as it was, I worked extremely hard and now I am reaping the rewards,” said Mrs Mthiyane.
This go-getter believes with education comes a better future and better chance for rising above poverty, especially for those, who like her, come from rural communities.
Mrs Mthiyane encouraged her colleagues and young people to further their studies to achieve better opportunities in life.
She is also currently registered for an honours degree at Unisa.
During Council last Thursday, Ugu speaker Ntombifuthi Gumede commended Mrs Mthiyane for obtaining her degree and for her on-going studies.
“You are a great example to us as councillors and to our communities,” said Mrs Gumede.
