Jazz lovers gear up for festival

According to the organisers, the festival celebrates living jazz legends while giving a platform to upcoming artists.

It’s that time of the year again where jazz patrons are gearing up for the annual Ugu Jazz Festival which takes place at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday, June 29.

With just two weeks left, this year’s festival hosted by Eyadini Events promises a great line up of musical artists.

According to the organisers, the festival celebrates living jazz legends while giving a platform to upcoming artists.

Patrons are encouraged to buy their tickets early to avoid disappointment as sales have picked up drastically over the past few weeks.

Ugu spokesman France Zama said the festival will offer a diverse jazz genre, including smooth jazz, pop jazz, Afro-soul and indigenous jazz.

On the day, jazz legends such as Judith Sephuma, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Caiphus Semenya, Lira, Thandiswa Mazwai, Tshepo Tshola, Mafikizolo, Umkhumbane Jazz Band and Mbuso Khoza will be sharing the stage.

Other performances include Naima K, Mlindo The Vocalist, Brenda Mtambo, Unathi, Malini, Mahotella Queens, Afro Soul, Zahara, Berita, Lady Zamar and Shekhinah.

Mr Zama said certain roads will be closed off so that residents living near to the venue are not compromised in any way.

“Traffic and safety measures have been arranged with the relevant law enforcement agencies,” he said.

Prices for VIP tickets are R1 200; Golden Circle R350 and General tickets cost R280.

Gates open at 10am.
