Fidler in the Hood: Been there, ‘Dunn’ that…

Sadly numbers have been dwindling, so do make an effort to support this popular social event.

HI, THERE. It’s that time of the year when we have to wrap up warmly. These are troubled times – and not just here in SA. Maybe it’s withdrawal symptoms, as there is little or no real football on the box and only 11 weeks to the new season. Despite prevailing winds of doom and gloom, there’s always a bright side of life, especially in the land of the living (even if only just). On with the show.

Dunn it

There’s still a lot of happy news around. Popular Postnet frontman Anthony Dunn tied the knot last week to Kim Resch at a beach wedding ceremony. When Kim walked into the Shelly branch on business that was it: game, set and match, all in three months. The Dunn family has mixed feelings, as Kim and Anthony will be leaving to live in Kent, England – a first time for Anthony, but a return home for South African-born Kim.

Close-knit family Barend and Maryna Dunn and baby sister Samantha Coetzee will be losing Anthony to Kent’s cold climes. Generally, it’s dads who shed a tear when losing a daughter, but this time it’s Barend’s tears at the impending departure of son Anthony. (A sad sign of the times here, the break-up of SA families). But, wipe away those tears, Barend, you have the whole town here with you in spirit.

Chimney sweep

Being an ex-pom, your scribe offered Anthony some career guidance, but was told ‘No worries, Rob, got a job already – I’m going to be a chimney sweep!’

Thinking Anthony was taking the proverbial mickey, but seemingly he was dead serious – apparently there’s a shortage and they are desperately looking for chimney sweeps.

Perhaps Anthony needed some Cockney accent coaching, just like Bert the chimney-sweep, played by Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins (1964)? But then he said ‘Rob, I’m only kidding!’ Who says South Africans haven’t a sense of humour? Anyway, all the best, Anthony and Kim.

Be moonstruck

Once again Ramsgate Conservancy will host the Moondeckers gathering at the Whale Deck Enviro Centre this coming Monday, June 17, at 5.30 for 6pm. All signs indicate that it will be a good night to see a full moon. Even though it’s mid-winter, wrap up warmly and enjoy great food and good company.

The cost is R40 per person, and remember to bring drinks, glasses and some extra cash for the lucky draw.

Loo with a view

On a daily run along Lilliecrona Boulevard, Uvongo, the route takes your scribe past by a funny little building – complete with stunning sea views. Actually, you cannot miss it. The place is right on the beach and has running water – though not necessarily where the running water should be heading. The song ‘Oh dear, what can the matter be; three old women stuck in a lavatory’ springs to mind. The loo with a view is something to die for and the air is bracing – so don’t breathe in too hard.

Collared by Kitty

The other day, your scribe had the pleasure of being collared by Kitty Steenmans, who wants to invite everyone to next month’s 35th annual Rotary Grandparents’ Walk on Wednesday, July 3. So, friends, another call to arms: take part in this year’s ‘Golden Oldies little Big Walk’ – it promises to be a great morning out.

Everyone, from beloved little ‘uns, to dearly-beloved grandfolks, will be there for this special Rotary event. There will be a scrumptious breakfast on offer for R20, all to the sound of Scottish bagpipes. So contact Kitty at 083 2543886 for further information. Special note: please do not say ‘Kitty, Kitty’ – one will definitely suffice.

See you, Rob.
