NOTE: Taxi fares to increase on Monday (July 1)
Santaco spokesman Sifiso Shangase said the increase was because of financial difficulties faced by taxi owners due to the rise in petrol prices and an increase in the petrol levy.
Taxi commuters will have to dig a little deeper from next week – the South African National Taxi Association (Santaco) has announced that taxi fares for local and long distance operations will increase from this Monday, July 1.
Santaco spokesman Sifiso Shangase said the increase, expected to be around R1 on most routes, was because of financial difficulties faced by taxi owners due to the rise in petrol prices and an increase in the petrol levy.

“Commuters should bear in mind that when petrol prices increase, taxi fares do not; these only increase once a year.”
According Mr Shangase all committees have been informed in order to allow them to prepare their commuters ahead of time.
“Notices have also been prominently displayed on all taxis operating in places that will be affected,” he said.
“In some places the fares might increase by more than R1, due to the distance travelled.”
