The role of a business analyst, similar to that of a business systems analyst, is an important one to make sure a company stays up to date with their protocols and operations. This means running smooth processes and streamlined systems which help the business strive for excellence.

The business analyst is tasked with evaluating the systems in a company to ensure they are working as well as they should be. Business systems should be performing at maximum efficiency, and it’s the job of the business analyst to make sure this happens.

Part of the role of a business analyst is dedicated to researching the company’s operations and identifying what systems are in place that are driving the success of the business. The analyst is tasked with optimising the systems and finding solutions to improve the systems that are not efficient. These could be related to departments such as human resources and finance but usually has a key focus on information technology (IT) and software involved in the company.

It’s also up to the business analyst to know what the client needs and wants from a company or a project, and consider ways to align the client’s requirements with the company’s systems. This includes making sure the systems are optimised to achieve the best results to support the client as well as constantly evaluating the effectiveness of the processes in place.

What skills does a business analyst need?

The task of optimising a company’s systems is a large one and requires necessary competencies to undertake. In order to excel at their position, a business analyst should have a skillset broad enough to cater to the dynamic position. These skills are:

Communication

In any position of management, communication is a key factor. In business analysis, it is no difference. The ability to clearly explain a new system in a company is vital for the success of that system. If a business analyst is able to describe how to expertly conduct a process to the relevant team members, it is much more likely that the process will yield the best, most efficient results.

It is also important for the business analyst to communicate and liaise between the client and the company executives to ensure productive business relations which can result in mutual profit.

Consistent

In order to fully ensure a system is performing, it needs to be evaluated. Because of this key component in business analysis, it is important that the analyst is able to monitor the systems in a company consistently, using similar performance measures. This will make it easy to identify a problem or define where and when an issue arises. Consistent and concise evaluation also means that the analyst should be able to say with confidence that any systems are working as they should be.

Relational

Since a business analyst works in close communications with clients and stakeholders, being able to interact well on a professional level is an important skill to develop. The analyst should be able to exchange relevant and worthwhile information with the clients while building good, lasting business relationships.

Time management

Making sure systems run smoothly and as quickly as possible if a key part of a business analyst’s job. Because of this, the analyst should be able to manage their own time efficiently. It’s important for the analyst to understand good time management and work with deadlines in place so that operations can run smoothly and on time.

Out-of-the-box thinking

Despite clear planning, not everything always goes the right way. When unexpected problems form, it’s important for the analyst to identify them and be able to resolve the issues in a timeous manner. This requires creative and quick thinking from the analyst, who might need to address in a way different than usual. If issues can be stopped in their tracks, it means workflow need not be halted and operations can continue smoothly as intended.
