Umtamvuna Views: Volunteer your services and save our wildlife

Leisure Bay Conservancy recently discovered a number of well-hidden wire snares.

LOCAL conservancies do a wonderful voluntary job undertaking all sorts of conservancy-related chores. They regularly test ground water, handle complaints and queries, work tirelessly to help eradicate invasive plants and spearhead teams to sweep bush areas for illegal snares.

Poaching, which decimates our wildlife, is an ongoing issue in coastal towns and farms and wildlife is steadily decreasing at an alarming rate due to declining habitat, pollution, snares and hunting. Leisure Bay Conservancy recently started its annual winter snare sweeps and have discovered a number of well-hidden wire snares – a cruel trap for animals.

They are always looking for more volunteers, so if anyone is willing to give up some time to help with these outings, as seldom or often as you’re comfortable with, please contact Jenny Koen at 082 8573363.

Kind gesture

Victoria Young and Lawrence Oosthuis, who run the popular Ramsay Gardens Restaurant, recently decided to tie the knot. Victoria grew up in Port Edward with her mother, the late Junissa Young, and Lawrence is the oldest son of Charlene Wilmot-Lowe.

The young Port Edward couple held an informal ceremony officiated by Pastor John Pretorius on the beach near their home. Guests enjoyed a festive reception at the couple’s home. The newlyweds took a short honeymoon to the Wild Coast and stayed in a cottage at Umgazana near Port St Johns.

Newlyweds Lawrence (back) and Victoria Oosthuis (front) of Port Edward handed over 160kg of dog food to delighted locals during their honeymoon in Umgazana on the Wild Coast.

Before leaving they distributed many bags of dog food to locals who struggle to feed their pets. The caring couple plan to return to Umgazana in September and are currently collecting used clothing of any size or quality for donation to the needy in the area. If anybody would like to donate clothing, kindly drop it off at the restaurant or contact Lawrence at 039 3111006. It will be gratefully received.

Hobby crafts

Dannette Stewart is a kind-hearted women with a passion for people. Apart from her catering business, she loves to share craft skills (which she continually underplays) with other arty people. She recently held her first craft workshop on the deck of Krafty Chameleon near MacBanana Estate.

Seven women spent a delightful morning learning acrylic paint techniques on canvas. They enjoyed meeting new friends and the delicious lunch. Next month Dannette plans to share her knowledge of mosaics with anyone who would like to take part. For more information contact Dannette at 082 4421293.

Port Edward residents have been advised that the area’s water supply would be intermittent throughout the week (nothing new in Umtamvuna) and Eskom would undertake routine maintenance on Tuesday from 5am to 9pm. So the prospect of a week of no water and no power fuels frustration and anxiety.

All news to Philippa.
