Umtamvuna Views: ‘Big blue boat’ rolls down to Mozambique

Flynn Elliott and Graham McArthur sincerely thank everyone for their support over the years.

AFTER 38 years of operating on the Umtamvuna River, the familiar sight of ‘the big blue boat’ will no longer greet visitors and regulars as they drive over the suspension bridge that links KZN to Eastern Cape.

The Spellbound Gambler will relocate to Mozambique where she will continue to entertain and carry appreciative passengers.

Owners Flynn Elliott and Graham McArthur sincereley thank the thousands of guests and dear friends who have supported them over the many years.

Fired up

The term ‘putting out fires’ is very appropriate for the way South Coasters are forced to live at the moment. On Monday this week, there were many winter veld fires around Port Edward filling the entire area with dense, impenetrable smoke.

The fires eventually burned themselves out as firefighters took too long to assist. On top of that, there is no water in Port Edward so threatened residents could not even douse their own perimeters to protect their homes.

There was also violent protest action in the Paddock/Izingolweni area. Residents in this area have been without water for more than ten days with sparse tanker deliveries to provide basic needs.

People are desperate and angry, so they blockaded the Izingolweni road with burning trees before throwing stones.

The road was closed to traffic for most of the day and protesters are demanding service from Ugu – which continues to roll out one excuse after another.

As a resident of Port Edward who has suffered the vagaries of this municipality for months, your scribe can understand the utter frustration and actually wonder if serious protest is the only negotiation tool that Ugu will take notice of.

Benevolent bowlers

A group of women who call themselves ‘Bowlers 4 Babies’ from Margate Bowling Club, established six years ago, have been hard at work knitting and sewing items for newborn babies in the maternity ward of Murchison Hospital.

The project has grown to include crafters and donors from five LSC bowling clubs and many non-bowlers.

Wendy Walker from Margate (left) and Trish Vermuelen of Ramsgate (middle) hand over 46 baby packs from ‘Bowlers 4 Babies’ to Sister Jennifer Latha of the maternity ward at Murchison Hospital.

The group is committed to creating 46 ‘baby packs’ a month for distribution. Anyone wanting to join the group or find out more can contact Wendy Walker at 082 7855062.

Port Edward Bowling Club celebrated Women’s Day with a jovial afternoon of friendly bowls. There was a good turnout from surrounding clubs and proceeds were given the Disabled Bowlers’ Association.

The club will close for spring treatment at the end of August and will reopen in November.

Diarise the date

Port Edward Christian Women’s Fellowship will hold its monthly meeting in the Methodist Church hall next Tuesday, August 27, at 9.30am.

All women are invited to come along and join in the fun of a general knowledge quiz, followed by tea and cake. For more information, contact Janice McCormick at 039 3111579.
