“The Saps Search and Rescue Unit were called out to the scene and an extensive search for the man yielded negative results,” he said.

Sgt Ncane said it is not known why the man ran into the water and no one has come forward with further information.

The search continued the following day, and the body of the man was found that afternoon.

Saps Search and Rescue were joined by paramedics from Med-Evac and KwaZulu Private Ambulance.

Glen Preston from Med-Evac wrote on Facebook: “It was a team effort by all involved. The most amazing thing about South Coast emergency services is how well Saps, the fire department, National Sea Rescue Institute, lifeguards and Emergency Medical Services come together to work as one unit to get the job done.”

Margate detectives will investigate an inquest case.
