‘Blackout’ makes a point

To highlight the plague and as a gesture of solidarity towards victims of gender-based violence, a call was made for a nation-wide 'blackout' last Friday.

SOUTH Africans have been outraged and horrified by the recent rape and murder of UCT student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, the kidnapping of six-year-old Amy-Lee de Jager in Vanderbijlpark, and the violent xenophobic attacks.

Pleas for the death penalty to be reinstated are gathering momentum as South Africans voice their disgust at the ever-increasing levels of violence against women and children.

To highlight the plague and as a gesture of solidarity towards victims of gender-based violence, a call was made for a nation-wide ‘blackout’ last Friday.

People across South Africa heeded that call, wearing black to protest the killing, rape and abduction of South African women.
