Treasure hunt helps hospice

The treasure of R10 000 was won by the Pest Crusaders team, who generously donated R5 000 of their winnings to hospice.

The Treasure Hunt fundraising event, organised by ‘Fallen Friends’ at the Buccanneers Pub in St Michaels on Saturday, had many pirates scrambling for the loot.

This exciting event in aid of South Coast Hospice attracted 80 treasure-seekers who combed the windy shores at St Michaels, maps in hand looking for buried treasure.

The treasure of R10 000 was eventually won by the Pest Crusaders team, who generously donated R5 000 of their winnings to hospice.

‘Fallen Friends’, is a team of pool players, who fundraise for South Coast Hospice, in memory of friends who have passed on.

Just for fun! All dressed-up in their pirate gear are (from left) Polla Harmse, Graham Pretorius and Chad de Gouveia from Buccaneers.

The initiative was inspired in 2013, after the loss of two friends who had been cared for by Sr Sheila Smook and Colleen Baxter through the South Coast Hospice Home Care Programme.

Richard Phillips and his pool playing friends were eager to show their appreciation for the care that hospice had given to their friends and their family members during their time of illness and grief.

The first pool competition, organised at the local pub, with the support of many generous sponsors, brought in R17 500 and has since become a popular event on the South Coast, bringing in over R100 000 annually.

Ahoy, matey! Having lots of fun (from left) are Shirley Gouws, Joanne Moore, Donna Monk, Cali Kiki Matthee and Dianne Abbott from Buccaneers.

Together with Neville Sutton and Vaughn Geldenhuys, the group ‘Fallen Friends’ formed, fundraising throughout the year for South Coast Hospice.

The group is now run by the brave and gutsy Theresa Knox and her team, together with the support of the Buccanneers Beach Pub and Grill in St Michaels.

“We are so grateful to the owners, Eben and Lia for their generous and ongoing support,” said BT King.

“Thank you to all who came out to support the Treasure Hunt on Saturday. Thank you to Theresa Knox and her team, and Eben and Lia and the staff of Buccanneers Pub. We are indeed humbled by our community and their willingness to give. Thank you to Pest Crusaders for their overwhelming generosity in sharing their winnings with hospice,” said Di van Dyk, CEO of South Coast Hospice.
