The cause of death must first be established by a post mortem examination by Forensic Pathology Services before the body can be released to the family.

POLICE have issued a warning to those whose loved ones have died due to ‘unnatural causes’ not to remove the body until the police give the go-ahead.

“Police must be notified of such deaths immediately so that an inquest docket can be opened for investigation,” said Port Shepstone Saps communications officer, Captain Petros Mpinge.

“Relatives suffer unnecessary trauma when it is discovered that the death was unnatural and the necessary procedures must still be carried out in order to have the body released for burial,” added Captain Mpinge.
