Hibberdene Happenings: Builders’ rubble creates an eyesore

Authorities should do something about the unsightly mess because it is not a welcoming sight for visitors.

SHARON Delport spent a short while visiting her aunt Thelma Naudé at Longbeach in Mtwalume recently. Sharon, who is a carer in the UK, is enjoying a break at her home in Pennington.

She was extremely distressed to see the amount of what appears to be builders’ rubble dumped on the side of the secondary road adjoining Longbeach and wondered if authorities could do something about the eyesore, or indeed, whether they are even aware of it.

It really is most unsightly and should be removed as soon as possible as it is not a welcoming sight for visitors.

School’s out

With school holidays upon us once again, there has been an influx of holidaymakers to the town and its resorts, whether just for the long weekend or the entire week of the holidays.

Visitors are wished a safe and enjoyable stay. The past weekend marked the spring equinox and hereafter (hooray!) nights will become shorter and days longer.

Ring the dates

Last Wednesday’s eye clinic went off very well and bookings for the next one on October 16 may be made with your scribe at either 039 6992536 or 073 1653961.

Unfortunately there was a slight hassle with some of the dental equipment and not all procedures could be completely finalised. Dr Khan did however cope admirably.

It is all systems go for the jumble/car boot sale to be held on Saturday, October 5, from early in the morning. Tables may be hired at R20 for the day and it is hoped that the public supports this fund-raising effort.

Contact Marie at 082 2935757 to organise a table. Peter Laubscher (aka DJ Funky) will provide the music and hopefully the weather plays its part.

The church’s ‘Knits and Natters’ group has been extremely industrious recently and presented some exquisite hand-made blankets to deserving people. The women meet on a Thursday morning at 9am and all are welcome.

Community matters

Work is well underway at the Methodist Church with repairs to the portion of the ‘Wall of Remembrance’ that was damaged during the horrendous April floods. The wall was severely damaged and it will be lovely to have it whole again.

Fienie Rosslee of Mtwalume has jetted off on a few weeks’ holiday to visit her children in Texas, USA, and Bristol in the UK. At the moment she is in Bristol and having a thoroughly enjoyable time.

And, speaking of Bristol, your scribe’s granddaughter Shannon, who is attending university there, is settling down well, has made some friends and describes the city as ‘amazing’.

Three cheers

Eleanor and Ken Walker, who recently returned from a visit to England, celebrate their anniversary on September 28th, and are wished a happy day and many more.

Special birthday wishes this week go to Jill Whitmore, who celebrates her 80th tomorrow (26th), while greetings also go to Brian Balfour (25th), Joan Nortjé (26th), Isobel McManus (28th), Arthur Seager (29th) and Tommy Allen (October 1).

All Hibberdonians are reminded to keep Lizzie informed of all happenings – no matter how unimportant they may seem.
