Just In: Close call for SPCA as fire threatens buildings and animals
It is believed the fire had started at a rubbish dump close to the property and had spread to the bush.
It was all hands on deck earlier today (Friday) when an out of control bushfire placed the SPCA premises in Quarry Road, Uvongo at risk.
Netcare 911 Advanced Life Support paramedic Tanya Grobler heard about the fire at around 3.15pm and raced to the scene, where a large number of people had gathered to offer their assistance in removing the animals to safety. Although a few of the animals were found to be suffering from minor breathing problems caused by smoke inhalation, most were perfectly healthy.

Only one, a grey cat, needed to be nebulised, but eventually made a full recovery and was given the all clear by SPCA officials. Five members of the community had to be treated for minor smoke inhalation but were found to be in a stable condition, according to Netcare 911.
It is believed the fire started at a rubbish dump close to the property and had spread to the bush. Fire and Rescue Services were on scene to douse the flames. “Well done to shelter officials and the Uvongo community members who offered assistance.,” said Netcare 911 spokesman, Shawn Herbst.
