KZN regional manager, Linda Nongena-Sigedle spoke to the Herald at Gamalakhe and said: “The department aimed to bring its services to the people, instead of them having to come to our offices. We started in Mdoni municipality on September 9, and the feedback received has been encouraging. People are making use of the services on offer, and we saw approximately 165 people per day.”

Compensation fund employees, Lungile Shezi (left) and Smangele Mabaso assist Mathi Ngcobo at Gamalakhe.

One hopeful youth who came to apply for a job said: “This sort of service has helped me a lot. I managed to apply for two jobs without having to spend a cent from my pocket. I saved on transport and travelling.”

Staffers from Port Shepstone branch of the Department of Employment and Labour look forward to assisting clients.

But, not everyone left with high hopes. one visitor said she had come to check her UIF status, only to find out there is none. “I worked for my previous employer for over four years, and the business collapsed. I have found out that despite my previous employer deducting UIF from my monthly salary, it was never directed to the fund. I am disappointed but have accepted I will receive nothing. I will move on since there is nothing more I can do,” she said.
