In keeping with International Coastal Day, a special beach clean-up was held at most beaches on the South Coast.
The International Coastal clean-up campaign began more than 30 years’ ago when communities rallied together with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering the coastline.

Conservationists were concerned about the carelessly discarded plastic items that found its way into the ocean. Once in the sea, plastic breaks into small particles that look like food and gets eaten by sea creatures such as fish and whales.
Umtentweni beach
A beach clean-up at Umtentweni beach, organised by the National Sea Rescue Institute Shelly Beach and the Beekman Group, last Saturday was both fun and educational.

The clean-up attracted many people, both young and old, and about 40 bags of rubbish were collected.
Port Shepstone
The Green Net group also held a successful clean-up at Port Shepstone beach. They were joined by surfers from Genesis Waves of Hope.

Information about proposed offshore mining was given and people were encouraged to sign a petition against it.
Sunwich Port
A clean-up organised by the Umtentweni Conservancy was held at Sunwich Port beach last Saturday. Some 80 bags of rubbish were picked up by volunteers.

Beach clean-ups also took place at Southport, Port Edward and the Wild Coast Sun.
