Recruiter Xolani Hlongwane of the Sunflower Fund’s stem cell drive for KwaZulu-Natal says this is a great achievement.

Xolani who beat Hodgkin’s lymphoma now works to help save others fighting blood diseases.
“All the donors will be added onto the registry once HLA typing is done. They will then be available to help any patient needing a blood stem cell transplant as their only hope of survival,” he said.
Ashton Dry (11) of Port Edward, who was diagnosed with aggressive acute myeloid leukaemia, was at the drive together with his family and friends.
Beautifully decorated cupcakes made by Ashton and his little brother Cody, as well as generous members of the community were sold with proceeds going towards the Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer.

Ashton’s mother, Nicole Dry said the family of Shalom Mkhize have joined Ashton’s Army and are doing all they can to help find Ashton a hundred percent match.
Shalom died a month ago, and sadly never got a stem cell transplant. He was fortunate that his younger brother, Matthew was a match.
Nicole and Xolani both thanked the South Coast community for their support and the owners of C-Bali Restaurant for hosting the drive.
The Sunflower Fund is a donor recruitment centre and registry.

It fights blood diseases such as leukaemia through the recruitment of stem cell donors and maintains a registry of potential donors committed to helping anyone in need of a life-saving stem cell transplant.
The organisation also fundraises to cover the cost of education and awareness campaigns and to cover the cost of the HLA tissue-typing test involved in the recruitment of donors.
