Umtamvuna Views: Vanessa loses the battle
The family express their heartfelt gratitude to Vanessa’s loyal circle of friends for supporting and visiting her right to the end.
IT IS with great sadness that your scribe reports the death of long-standing Munster resident, Vanessa Lawson (58). Vanessa discovered that she had a brain tumour in January this year and after a relatively short and brave fight, she died at her Munster home last Thursday (26th).

Vanessa lived in the area for almost 30 years. She was a bubbly, sociable person and ran a successful holiday letting business. She leaves her long-term partner Ivan Dyason, her father David Dugmore from Pietermaritzburg and brothers Colin and Russell.
Her memorial service will be held at the Port Edward Methodist Church tomorrow (October 3) at 12 noon. The family express their heartfelt gratitude to Vanessa’s loyal circle of friends for supporting and visiting her right to the end.
Amazing new sanctuary
Leisure Bay Conservancy has an exciting new project on the go – a firefly sanctuary. Readers may be amazed and wonder what on earth such a thing is, but a natural wetland near Kidds Beach is being cordoned off to prevent vehicles from disrupting the habitat of these special insects.
There was a time about 20 years ago when fireflies would light up the bushy area at the bottom of your scribe’s garden, but sadly, for the past 15 years, not one has been seen.
The sad truth is that a myriad of insects, animals and birds are losing their natural habit to development and agriculture.
We also use far too many chemicals in the form of pesticides and fertilizers that destroy the delicate balance of nature.
To market
Don’t forget the morning market this Saturday, (5th) from 8am to noon at Port Edward Methodist Church. Take the family, meet friends there for breakfast and coffee and browse around the many, varied stalls.
Salute to Colleen
Finally, your scribe personally expresses her sincere gratitude and admiration for Colleen Haggard, who has now retired as editor of the South Coast Herald. Few readers were aware of her enormous input in managing the input of the paper and she will be sorely missed. Colleen has been a pillar of the community and her retirement is the end of an era.
Rain, glorious rain. This time of year is magical as everything gears up for the new season. Shrubs and trees are sprouting, and wild flowers are waking up in the grasslands. There is new life all around and spring will soon be sprung with the heat of summer engulfing us. What a privilege to be able to enjoy the changing seasons away from the big city.
All news to Philippa.
