Robin de Kock, general manager of Surfing South Africa said the 23rd edition of this important surfing championship will be remembered for its difficult onshore conditions and small surf on the first four days, but conditions for the finals were good and the vibes throughout the competition were excellent.

The Ugu team consisted of 19 members; coaches Derek Horlock and Cody Coetsee and team manager, Claudia Attfield-Fuchs.

The youngest members were Louise Lepront (11) and Llewellyn Engelbrecht (10).

Louise made the final in the U12 girl’s division and achieved an impressive third place overall.

Llewellyn reached the semi-final in his U12 boy’s division with some gutsy surfing coming fifth overall.

Other semi-finalists, Jesse Powell in the U16 girl’s division came seventh, and Jordy Boshoff in the U16 boy’s category secured fifth place.

Both Jesse and Jordy showed major improvement over last year and surfed well against some stiff competition.

“The U16 division is extremely tough and competitive, and Jordy stood out and excelled,” said Claudia.

In the quarter-finals, Kira Attfield placed seventh overall in the U14 girl’s division with Evan Spittal and Evan Peyios securing ninth overall in the U14 boy’s category.
