New Ugu mayor promises to deliver

Service delivery, clean governance and zero tolerance to internal strike action, he said, were at the top of his agenda.

Newly elected Ugu District Municipality mayor Sizwe Ngcobo has vowed to clean up Ugu in his first 90 days in office.

He promised to usher in “a new era of service delivery, stimulated by ethos of good governance, accountability and transparency”.

Addressing councillors and guests shortly after his swearing in at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre on Tuesday this week, Cllr Ngcobo said his task would be the execution of the mandate given to him by his party, for the people.

Service delivery, clean governance and zero tolerance to internal strike action, he said, were at the top of his agenda.

The new mayor assumes his leadership role at a time when South Coast residents are faced with ongoing water cuts and growing dissatisfaction with the municipality’s failure to deliver decent services.

Ugu municipal manager DD Naidoo and newly elected Ugu mayor Sizwe Ngcobo address the media after the swearing-in ceremony.

A dysfunctional billing system and persistent water and power outages are chief among the complaints.

Councillor Ngcobo said his team would be working on a turn around strategy for Ugu and promised that the issues that required quick intervention would be prioritized in the next 90 days.

He said this task could not be executed by one man; it required collective wisdom and effort from all councillors.

“We therefore call on all councillors, both from the ruling party and the opposition parties, to work with us as we embark on a journey to stabilise and reposition Ugu.”

He added that his team would be working hard to put an end to regular strikes, disruption of services and acts of vandalism which, he said, were giving the municipality a bad reputation.

“We will not tolerate vandalism and destruction of public infrastructure. Our task is to serve the people of Ugu and to ensure that Ugu responds to the service delivery demands of its people.”

Councillor Ngcobo, who is a former Umzumbe municipality mayor, replaces Mondli Chiliza who was sent to the Provincial Legislature by the ANC earlier this year.
