Two nabbed for fake liquor

The owner of a liquor outlet in Marburg was arrested and charged with dealing in counterfeit goods.
The arrest was a result of an intelligence driven operation undertaken by Saps Port Shepstone along with members from the Liquor Board, Customs and SARS.

The owner of the store was sentenced to a fine not exceeding R10 000, or 12 months’ imprisonment of which R5 000 or six months was suspended for a period of five years.
The liquor was forfeited to the State for destruction.
Ugu Cluster Commander, Major General Sethenya Nxamagele was pleased with the result and confirmed that this sentence had established a precedent for other liquor outlets which are dealing in questionable liquor or who have contravened the Liquor License Act.
“Ongoing compliance inspections held in Marburg by Port Shepstone Liquor Officer, Warrant Officer Johan Maree led to the arrest of another man (37). He was charged with possession of counterfeit goods.
“Several boxes of vodka were seized from the liquor outlet and a sample will be sent for analysis. The man was released on bail of R2 500.”
