Hibberdene Happenings: Well-loved Barbara is mourned
She will be remembered for her sense of humour and zest for life, as well as her love for animals.
A pall of sadness has been cast over Hibberdene with the sudden death of Barbara Sates, either late on Friday night or in the early hours of Saturday morning – she was found dead when her domestic worker reported for duty last Saturday morning.

Barbara (74) was loved by everyone and always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she came across. She will be remembered for her sense of humour and zest for life, as well as her love for animals. She had been involved in several types of sport throughout the years, and was an active member of the Hibberdene Bowling Club, playing in both tournaments and social games.
Having been hospitalised with heart problems about six weeks ago, it is suspected that a heart attack was the cause of Barbara’s death. Rest in peace Barbs, your death will leave a void that will be hard to fill. Deepest sympathy is extended to her daughter Kim and grandchildren Nicholas and Tyla de Beer during this sad time.
Fun market
Head out to Koelwaters Resort for Mtwalume’s next flea market this Saturday, December 14, at 9am. It will have a super party vibe and provide an opportunity to catch up on some last minute Christmas shopping, so make sure you attend. Andy Els will set the scene with his foot-tapping brand of music and a bumper crowd is expected.
Church events
Saturday’s men’s and women’s breakfast at the Methodist Church was well attended and a delicious meal, some great fellowship and an inspiring address by Reverend Jim van Helsingdon of Uvongo was enjoyed.
The breakfasts will be in recess during January and will recommence in February.
The sounds of beautiful music emanated from the church during last Sunday’s service when a police choir took to the stage during the annual carol service. Voices and arrangements were unbelievable and choirmaster Bheki Mpunzana certainly excelled in his final performance at Hibberdene.
New minister Anneli Mey and her husband André were also warmly welcomed and it is hoped that they enjoy many happy years with the Hibberdene congregation.
Cakes, bargains and winners
Remember that Lions’ Christmas cakes are on sale at Salon Marguerite at a nominal fee. They are selling quite rapidly, so hurry and get yours in time for Christmas. They may also be purchased at the clinic on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning. New ‘used’ items have been unpacked at the clinic shop, so use the same morning to pop around and browse the latest acquisitions.
Winners of the Lions’ latest lucky draw have been announced and congratulations go to David Rush (Feed and Seed), Greg Beck (Fifi’s Fresh Fish), Sandra Smith Endicott (Tiago’s Open Flame), Linda Rathnam (Salon Marguerite), Cliff le Roux (Blue Waters Pub and Grill), Barry McDonald (Hibberdene Pharmacy), Lorraine Lawlor (Donnée Water) and again Barry McDonald (Lions’ Christmas cake).
Celebrating birthdays this week are Annatjie Pretorius (11th), Ronel Smit (14th), Almarie Wandrag (16th) and Susan Hechter (17th).
