A 71-year-old farmer was attacked by an intruder who was reportedly armed with a bush knife, at Hluku near Harding on Christmas Day.

According to reports, the farmer was attacked shortly after his sons and their families had left for home shortly after 3pm.

It appears the intruder surprised the farmer inside his house, where he demanded guns and money.

He then attacked the farmer with the bush knife.

The farmer apparently leapt into the swimming pool, and the intruder followed.

After grappling with the intruder in the pool, the farmer managed to reach his bakkie.

The attacker had reportedly slashed one of the vehicle’s tyres, but this didn’t stop the farmer from driving to a nearby farm for help.

He was thought to have been treated for deep gashes to his leg, chest and head.

Police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed that a case of attempted murder had been opened and that investigations were continuing.
