Matric results – Ugu District ranks top in province
Some 20 schools recorded a 100 percent pass rate.
Twenty schools in the Ugu District recorded a 100 percent matric pass rate for 2019, a result which saw the district placed first in KwaZulu-Natal.
The department of education said this was ‘an enormous improvement’ on last year’s results when just 10 schools managed a 100 percent pass rate.

Ugu District as a whole achieved a pass rate of 86.3 percent, six percent higher than the 2018 results.
This according to the official National Senior Certificate results released by basic education minister Angie Motshekga in Midrand on Tuesday this week.
KwaZulu-Natal premier Sihle Zikalala applauded the District for its hard work and dedication to education.
He commended the district’s teachers and stakeholders who played a pivotal role in ensuring a continuous improvement in the NSC results.
Schools with a perfect pass rate include Westbury College of Science, St Martin de Porres, Port Shepstone Islamic, Scottburgh High, Bhekamandelu High, Mdulashi Junior Secondary, Tholisu Secondary, Thembuzulu Secondary, Albert Secondary, Sithuthukile Secondary, Siphephile Secondary, Sanywana High, Ntabalukhozi High, Mqhakama High, Malangeni Secondary, Ugu Centre 2, Charles Nhlengwa High, Nomazwe High, Bhanoyi Secondary and Sinomusa High.
The top five pupils who were acknowledged for their achievements at the Durban International Convention Centre yesterday (Wednesday) are:
1. Che Habib (Port Shepstone High)
2. Sinelisiwe Matubatuba (Margate Middle School)
3. Nomalungelo Nombika (Zibonele Junior Secondary)
4. Sfundo Oratile Shozi (Scottburgh High)
5. Michelle Kretzschmar (Suid-Natal High)
The Independent Examination Board for private schools results, released on Tuesday this week, revealed a pass rate of 98.82 percent, a slight drop of 0.1 percent from the previous year.
Creston College and Southcity Christian Schools both recorded a 100 percent pass rate.
Yesterday (Wednesday) hundreds of anxious pupils descended on their schools for their individual results.
Andiswa Nxumalo from Margate Middle School told the Herald that she was a nervous wreck prior to receiving her certificate.
“Now I’m happy, I have made my parents proud,” she said.
Andiswa has been accepted at Walter Sisulu University where she will study towards a human resources degree.
Head of examinations in the Ugu District, Nkosinathi Madadi said,”This achievement is an indication of coordinated interventions, team work and sacrifices for the betterment of our pupils’ education.”
He added that the district had to continue working hard to maintain this performance and focus on improving results from grades 1 to 12.
