Outrage over monkey shooting in Banners Rest

Residents are urged to report wildlife and pet cruelty.

Another shooting of a monkey with a pellet gun has sparked outrage, with residents and community organisations calling for action against those responsible for harming wildlife and pets.

The male monkey was found at Banners Rest Retirement Village recently, after being shot in the head.

Corné van Zyl of Monkey Guardians said the animal’s entire right side was paralysed and it had to be euthanised.

She thanked residents for their response after an appeal for information was shared on social media.

She said names, unit numbers and addresses linked to reports of monkey shootings had been received and would be checked and followed up.

The Umtentweni Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association has also raised serious concerns at their recent monthly meeting about reports of animals being shot and killed in the area, including monkeys, Egyptian geese and cats.

Following its monthly meeting, the association said it would engage with the SPCA, Saps, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), environmental services, nature conservation and other relevant parties.

Residents with information, video footage or details about specific locations and patterns of shootings are urged to come forward. Those concerned about intimidation may submit information anonymously.

Monkey Guardians has called for those responsible to be held accountable, stressing that the shootings must stop.

Residents are urged to report information directly to Corné on 082-406-5039 rather than naming individuals in social media comments.

The community is reminded that animal cruelty and the unlawful discharge of airguns in residential areas can have serious legal consequences.

Both organisations have stressed that the matter will be pursued through the appropriate legal channels.
