Greenfingers Garden Club: New garden was a delight

The club's first visit to Marina van Laer's garden was wonderful.

Caroline shared some hints on looking after gardens, which included a reminder not to forget pot plants and hanging baskets as these can dry out very quickly in windy weather. Other tips included:

* Cut the lawn as high as possible as it gives the roots a chance to grow

* Mulch flower beds

* Weed around shrubs to ensure all the nutrients are absorbed by the plants and not the weeds

* Water either early or late as water on the leaves in the sun can burn

* Lift and split ground covers

* Watch for fungus on plants, especially roses. Try to use a natural insecticide and only spray infected plants

* Prune past flowering shrubs and cut the water shoots off bougainvilleas.

Caroline also reminded members that subs of R30 were due this month.

The club’s first visit to Marina van Laer’s garden was wonderful.

It was delightful to wander along little paths and coming across big clumps of flowering shrubs and wondering where you would come out next.

It seemed a big garden as we couldn’t see any fences and it was lovely and wild. Thank you Marina, for your hospitality.

Liz Thompson presented one of her very difficult quizzes which caused a lot of hilarity.

The winners of the competitions were: Pot plant – 1st Rina Mason, Karen Veleur and Annetjie Lottering; 2nd Deon Pienaar and Steph Howell. Best herb – 1st Wendy van der Hever, Dion Pienaar, Des Cuff, Karen Veleur and Annetjie Lottering; 2nd Steph Howell.

Best veg -1st Steph Howell and Des Cuffe; 2nd Dion Pienaar and Ron Jones; 3rd Wendy van der Hever.
