Driver tries to mow down police on N2

When the officers noticed that the stolen minibus wasn't stopping and was heading straight for them, they opened fire on the vehicle's tyres.

THE theft of a minibus in Marburg ended in a volley of gunfire at the Umzinto off-ramp on the N2 last Sunday night.

“The description of the stolen vehicle was immediately circulated to Saps members,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.

Ugu Cluster Operational Command Centre members were patrolling the N2 freeway northbound in Hibberdene when they spotted the vehicle.

“The driver was signalled to stop but he evaded the members and started to drive recklessly,” said Captain Francis.

More officers were stationed near the Umzinto off-ramp to prevent the vehicle from passing, but when the officers noticed that the vehicle wasn’t stopping and was heading straight for them, they opened fire on the vehicle’s tyres.

The vehicle then ploughed into a Saps patrol van.

No one was injured..

The driver was arrested for reckless and negligent driving, for being in possession of property suspected to be stolen and for attempted murder.
