Sfundo racked up distinctions in physical science, mathematics, accounting, history, IsiZulu first additional language and life orientation.

“My favorite subject was definitely accounting as I have a natural flair for the subject,” he said.

He will put that to good use, studying towards a BCom accounting degree at the University of Pretoria in order to realise his dream of becoming a chartered accountant.

One of Sfundo’s biggest challenges at the beginning of his matric year was, he said, balancing a heavy homework workload and adequate study time.

“On top of that there was the added pressure to perform well in order to be provisionally accepted at university.

“To deal with this, I established a study routine to ensure that I wouldn’t focus too much on some subjects and neglect others.”

He added that his family, in particular his mother, had supported him throughout the year.

“I would without a doubt not have achieved these results without them,” he said.

Sfundo added that developing a study routine and practising with past exam papers had also contributed to his sterling results.

He singled out his IsiZulu teacher, Muriel Hlongwane and friends, Sibusiso Magwaza (five As) and Panashe Makoni (four As) for their assistance and support.

The top five pupils were acknowledged for their achievements at a function held at the Durban International Convention Centre last week.
