Residents repair their own road

The most recent round of repairs began in December and the residents go out once or twice a week to work on the road.

PEOPLE living in Gumtree Road, Pennington have decided not to sit back and wait for their road to be repaired and have tackled the job themselves.

Tony Hoggins began repairing this road five years ago, and even put together his very own machinery to help him get the job done.

“I got tired of relying on the municipality so I decided to get stuck in myself, with the help of a few of other residents,” he said.

“I’ve watched municipal workers do road repairs, but most of the time, it’s a temporary fix and I wanted to do something permanent.”

Tony built his own equipment which includes a mixer and road cutter and with the help of and contributions from the folk at Milkwood Estate, the group was able to get to work.

Gumtree Road has many potholes, and repairs require a measured approach.

Tony and his team first neatly cut around the entire pothole, dig up the road, then re-tar it.

“It’s a lot of work and can be very strenuous but we manage,” said another Gumtree Road resident, Kevin O’ Donoghue.

“We actually have to get the job done because many of us living in this road have vehicles with low profile tyres and if the potholes are not repaired, this could cause substantial damage to our cars.”

Last week, one Milkwood Estate resident paid her personal gardener to assist with the road repairs, while another provided meals for the helpers.

“We have to bear these costs but at the end of the day we’re doing it for our own benefit,” added Tony.
