Construction starts at Masinenge
Last week residents protested against the lack of progress in the construction of homes.
The Department of Human Settlements has confirmed that construction workers are now on site at Masinenge informal settlement after assurances were made last week, following protest action by residents.
A large crowd burnt tyres and used other objects to block the road to voice their concern as to when the housing project would resume.

“Labourers are on site. Sand was delivered on Tuesday this week, and the TLB which is used for excavation should also be on-site,” said Mbulelo Baloyi, spokesman for the department.
During the protest, Ugu District director Luyanda Kafile and head of Human Settlements Mdu Zungu addressed the crowd and it was agreed the contractor, Stedone Development, would move on-site on Monday this week to resume construction of houses.
According to Mr Baloyi, the estimated timeframe for completion of the project is 36 months.
The Masinenge slum clearance project was launched by Human Settlements MEC Ravi Pillay and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality in 2013 when the construction site was handed over.
