Margate Saps scoops second at national awards

The 7th National Excellence Awards recognises and acknowledge the men and women in blue, including support staff, reservists and community policing forums who displayed extraordinary excellence and commitment in the execution of their daily duties and beyond.

The South Coast is a safer place, thanks in part to the sterling efforts of staff at Margate Police Station, under the command of Brigadier William Slabbert.

The station recently scooped second place at the 7th National Excellence Awards in Port Elizabeth.

This annual event is held to recognise and acknowledge the men and women in blue, including support staff, reservists and community policing forums who displayed extraordinary excellence and commitment in the execution of their daily duties and beyond.

Margate was a leader in the field, with station management appointing a task team to address all serious cases, and to ensure continued professionalism, discipline and overall high morale.

As a result crimes such as murder, sexual offences, robbery (aggravated and common), burglary (residential and non-residential), rape and sexual assault had decreased.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said the back to basics approach enforced by management had paid dividends, adding that the emphasis was on not deviating from the set rules put in place.

“The station embarked on quarterly accountability sessions where all commanders were required to provide feedback on their achievements or poor performance,” he said.

Brigadier Slabbert expressed his appreciation to all staff for making this achievement possible and assured them of his constant and full support in helping them excel.
