Courier comes under fire on N2

The man was carrying more than R30 000 in cash and was travelling on the northbound carriageway when the shots were fired.

AN uMhlanga resident has warned motorists using the N2 between Ifafa and Bazley to be hyper-vigilant after a gang of men opened fire on him on Monday last week.

The driver, who did not want to be named, said the incident occurred at about 5.30pm just after the Ifafa off-ramp.

The man, who runs a small goods courier company, was carrying more than R30 000 in cash and was travelling on the northbound carriageway when he came under fire.

“I think this gang saw the canopy of my bakkie and assumed I had something of value in the vehicle,” he said.

“I don’t have any logos on my bakkie so I think the attack was opportunistic.

“I noticed a white VW sedan drive up alongside my vehicle. The passenger in the front seat pointed a firearm at me and ordered me to pull over.

“As an experienced driver, I kept calm and accelerated. It was at this point the passenger opened fire and tried to shoot my front tyre,”

The man added that the gunman fired off five or six shots while trying to push his bakkie off the road.

“After two or three kilometres, the sedan dropped back and stopped in the emergency lane. I think they may have had mechanical difficulties,” he said.

Running on adrenaline, the man made his way to Scottburgh Police Station.

“When I got out of my vehicle I realised how lucky I was – at least two bullets had hit the sill just below the right hand door, ” he said.

“I was extremely traumastised by the incident and I felt other courier companies needed to be warned. I do feel they must’ve been watching my vehicle and decided that stretch was quiet enough to try and run me off the road,” he said.
