WhatsApp group raises funds for sick mum

The woman had not seen her children in two years and the money raised enabled her to travel, to tell them of her illness in person.

People came together on a WhatsApp group to raise funds for a former Margate woman, also a group member, who has cancer.

The funds are to enable Rauxane Schoeman (45) to visit her children in Limpopo.

The WhatsApp group ‘Our Community’ was started by Michelle Wright a few years ago. She says this is a feel-good story, especially in today’s world of negativity and nastiness.

“Members of the group, particularly Jolandi van Heerden and Ez Winters (who started the campaign) got together to raise enough money from group members for Rauxane to visit her children, aged 19 and 25,” said Michelle.

Rauxane, who now lives in Vryheid, left for Limpopo by bus on Thursday last week.

Rauxane Schoeman (45) will now be able to tell her children of her illness in person.

She wanted to be with her children when she told them about her illness and that she would be going to Queen Nandi Women’s Hospital for treatment in April.

“She didn’t want to give them the news over the phone and also wanted to see them during this difficult time,” said Michelle.

Rauxane hasn’t seen her children for two years.

According to Jolandi, the fundraising was daunting. “It’s quite scary to ask people for help because some of them judge or make nasty comments.”

Ez Winters was the driving force behind the fund-raiser.

Nonetheless, due to people’s generosity, R3 700 was raised for Rauxane and her partner to accompany her. As Rauxaune is on morphine, it was not advisable for her to travel alone.

“Some people were only able to donate R20 and apologised for giving so little. But every little bit helped,” said Jolandi.

‘Our Community’ covers the area from Ramsgate to Port Shepstone.

Its main requirement is to be nice and it strives to unite the community and help wherever possible.
