This is an opportunity for members of the public to surrender illegally possessed or unwanted firearms, ammunition and/or firearm parts to the police without fear of being prosecuted for the unlawful possession thereof.

THE firearm amnesty declared by Minister of Police, Bheki Cele last year will end on May 31.
This is an opportunity for members of the public to surrender illegally possessed or unwanted firearms, ammunition and/or firearm parts to the police without fear of being prosecuted for the unlawful possession thereof.

The objective of the amnesty is to reduce the large pool of illegal/unwanted firearms, ammunition and/or firearm parts that are in circulation in the country.
The following may apply:
• Persons in possession of a firearm without a legitimate license, permit or authorisation.
• Persons in possession of a firearm part (slide, bolt or breech-block) without a licensed firearm capable of bearing that part.
• Persons in possession of ammunition without a licensed firearm capable of discharging the ammunition without a collectors permit.
• Persons in possession of illegally imported firearms.
• Persons who inherited firearms but failed to obtain a license, permit of authorisation for such firearms.
• Persons who have been declared unfit to possess a firearm, but failed to surrender their firearms and ammunition.
• Businesses including private security businesses with firearms and ammunition that ceased to carry on business and failed to dispose of the firearms and ammunition.
• Persons in possession of firearms of which the firearm license, permit or authorisation has been terminated in terms of the Act.
• Institutions which wish to surrender obsolete/redundant/discarded firearms.
