“Annually, businesses in the Ugu District suffer a great deal of damage due to tourists cancelling their accommodation. Our local economy also suffers greatly as a result and that is why we decided to issue a reward for information that can lead to prosecution,” said Barry Smit, chairman of AfriForum Margate.
“We suspect the sabotage is being committed so that individuals and groups can benefit from possible contract work. This can be regarded as water hijacking, which is a violation of human rights,” said Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s district coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.
AfriForum also approached the national office of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) to investigate the charge that has been previously submitted to the provincial office but has not yet been investigated.
AfriForum is encouraging people who have information about these incidents to come forward. Information will be treated as confidential and can be reported to Wessel Pretorius at 082 3186195.
Conditions will apply with regard to the reward.
