Man (25) drowns at Port Shepstone beach

Police have opened an inquest docket.

A fisherman who fell into the surf at Port Shepstone last Thursday (March 5), drowned despite intensive rescue efforts by emergency services.

At about mid-afternoon, NSRI Shelly Beach, along with police K-9 search and rescue, police search and rescue, KwaZulu-Natal government health, Saps, and Med-Evac ambulance services responded to a drowning at the Mzimkhulu river mouth.

The sea rescue craft Spirit of Shelly was towed to the scene and launched to join the Med-Evac rescue craft, God’s Grace that was on the water searching for a missing man. Paramedics and police search and rescue officers were on board.

Shoreline search efforts were also conducted.

During the search, the body of a man (25) who had been fishing from the dollosse before he fell into the surf was located and recovered onto the Med-Evac rescue craft.

He was brought to shore where he was declared dead by paramedics.

The body of the man was taken into the care of government health forensic pathology services.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
